Deck the Halls…. But Keep the Holly Away From Your Pets!
The Christmas season is upon us, and many people are decorating their homes for the upcoming festivities. Here are some potentially dangerous household decorations you should keep out of your pet’s reach this Holiday Season:
Holly and Mistletoe: The leaves and berries (dried or fresh) of these plants contain toxins that can cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and abdominal pain in pets even if eaten in small amounts. Eaten in large enough quantities, these plants can cause seizures and even death. Poinsettias: The sap in the bright red leaves of this plant can cause irritation of the mouth and esophagus of your pets if they chew on them. The leaves can also cause nausea and vomiting. However, they would need to consume a very large amount of the plant for serious side effects to develop. Christmas trees & Decorations: The needles and branches of Christmas trees can cause irritation to the mouths, stomach and intestines of your pets. If your pet swallows a large amount of the pine needles, they are at risk of having an intestinal obstruction or puncture. Christmas tree decorations, such as tinsel and glass ornaments, can also pose serious health risks if consumed.
Antibody Titre Testing:
We are excited to announce that we now do in-clinic antibody titre testing for dogs. These titre tests check the levels of antibodies in your dog’s body for Parvovirus, Distemper, and Adenovirus to ensure that their vaccines have been effective or if you are unsure if a vaccine is necessary. Titres can be checked 2 weeks after the vaccine has been administered. Older dogs may benefit from having their titres tested, as they may not need to be vaccinated annually if their titres are still high enough to provide protection from these diseases. A Warm Welcome to Stephanie!
Stephanie, raised in a military family, has moved throughout Eastern Canada, but she has called Winnipeg home for many years now. One constant in Stephanie’s life has been the large variety of pets that have helped to grow her love for all animals. Stephanie’s ever-expanding pet-family includes a Mexican Black Kingsnake, a planted Fishtank, and “Ajax”, a Main-Coone mix. She is currently on the waiting list to start the Veterinary Technician program at Red River College. Stephanie looks forward to helping you and your pet at Seasons Veterinary Clinic!
