So why is dental disease so important?

Dental disease is an insidious process. It begins out of sight, in the sulcus of the tooth – just above the gum line. What starts out as a soft plaque, quickly forms into a hard tartar, and then the disease is off to the races. Because the disease begins out of sight, the symptoms can be very hard to notice in the early stages: mildly reddened gums, and in cats, a pink line on the edges of the gum, can be the only symptoms as the crowns of the teeth that we can see may still be pearly white. Once the disease begins to advance, we see the more characteristic yucky looking teeth, bad breath, enflamed gums and (sometimes) oral pain – oral pain is almost always there, it is often just hidden by our stoic furry friends.

So what is the big deal?

Not to mention the oral pain caused, this disease results in a constant showering of bacteria into the pet’s blood stream – just like in our own bodies when we have oral disease. These bacteria can settle out of the blood onto the valves of the heart leading to heart disease, into the kidneys, or liver. Once an infection is set up in these organs, we often struggle to be able to get it under control, or cured. So preventing disease from spreading from the mouth into the internal organs is of vital importance to the overall health and long life of our pets. During a complimentary dental exam, Dr. Chisholm will assess your pet’s oral health and make recommendations on how we can keep your pet healthy pain free and living their longest, fullest life!
