Keep Your Pets Safe This Fall
Ready or not, Fall is officially here! This new season presents some potential health hazards for your dogs and cats. Listed below are just a few of the things that you should watch out for this season when it comes to keeping your pets safe.
Halloween Treats
Resisting the urge to indulge in a little bit of Halloween chocolate is nearly impossible for both people and pets alike. These sweet treats, however, can be very dangerous for your dog or cat. Chocolate produces the compound theobromine during digestion, which is processed very slowly in dogs and cats. Theobromine can accumulate in your pet’s body if they eat a large amount of chocolate, resulting in serious complications. Small amounts of chocolate can cause diarrhea and vomiting in cats and dogs. Be sure to keep an eye on your pets when they are around the Halloween treats!
Mushrooms
Mushrooms and fungi tend to sprout in the fall in areas that many pets can reach, such as lawns, trees, and old stumps. Most mushrooms that are found in the city are not harmful to dogs and cats but, the few species of mushrooms that are toxic to pets cannot be easily distinguished from those that are harmless. We recommend that you remove any visible mushrooms from your yards; It is better to be safe than sorry!
Rat Poisons
Many people use rodenticides to keep unwelcomed mice and rats from taking cover in their homes from the cold. When using these products, be very careful to keep them out of your pet’s reach, as they are fatal when consumed. If you suspect your pet has consumed rat poison, contact your veterinarian immediately.
